"Her" is a romantic science fiction drama film written, directed, and produced by Spike Jonze. It tells the story of a lonely man who suffers from parting with his wife and falls in love with a brand-new operating system.

Cast
  • Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore Twombly
  • Scarlett Johansson as Samantha (voice)
  • Amy Adams as Amy
  • Rooney Mara as Catherine
  • Olivia Wilde as Amelia
  • Chris Pratt as Paul
  • Matt Letscher as Charles
  • Luka Jones as Mark Lewman
  • Kristen Wiig as Sexy Kitten (voice)
  • Bill Hader as Chat Room Friend #2 (voice)
  • Portia Doubleday as Isabella
  • Brian Cox as Alan Watts (voice)
  • Spike Jonze as Alien Child (voice)

"Being John Malkovich" (1999) and "Adaptation" (2002) are films of the same director as "Her" - Spike Jonze. As for the last picture, I like his way of storytelling - careful but not slow moving that let show a depth of each character.

Acting is absolutely splendid in this film, moreover, the cast consists almost only of my favourite actors and actresses. Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore Twombly is incredible: I believed his every emotion especially during his character's relationships with Samantha. Samantha's voice which is Scarlett Johansson's one sounds so perfect, so magic. My lovely Amy Adams shows a good performance as always: her role is much more difficult than it can appear at first sight. Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde and Chris Pratt also coped with their characters portraying people who influences Theodore's life.

Advantages
  • Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore Twombly
  • Scarlett Johansson as Samantha
  • Amy Adams as Amy
  • Rooney Mara as Catherine
  • Olivia Wilde as Amelia
  • Chris Pratt as Paul
  • An unusual topic

Disadvantages
  • A little too slow moving

"Strangenesses"
  • How lonely people are?

Clue Moments
  • The appearance of Samantha
  • Theodore's communication with Amy

Loving a thing? Why not. Today almost everyone has a thing that he or she loves most: for one it's a book, for the second it's a film, for the third - a video game and so on. The meaning is that we're in love not exactly with things but with emotions and feelings they give us; with how they change us. Is it bad?

As for Samantha, she's more than a thing because of her abilities like evolving or empathising. And also these capabilities makes her more humane. So there's no wonder Theodore falls in love with her. They grow together spiritually, they know ourselves and each other, they learn to love. However all good things come to an end and relationships aren't an exception. Is it sad? Yes. Is it wrong? Not completely. When one door closes, an other one opens or something like this. I know it's difficult to understand at first but after a while a person feels that things sort themselves.

Quotations
* * *
Theodore: Sometimes I think I have felt everything I'm ever gonna feel. And from here on out, I'm not gonna feel anything new. Just lesser versions of what I've already felt.
* * *
Samantha: The past is just a story we tell ourselves.
* * *
Amy: I think anybody who falls in love is a freak. It's a crazy thing to do. It's kind of like a form of socially acceptable insanity.
* * *
Samantha: It's like I'm reading a book... and it's a book I deeply love. But I'm reading it slowly now. So the words are really far apart and the spaces between the words are almost infinite. I can still feel you... and the words of our story... but it's in this endless space between the words that I'm finding myself now. It's a place that's not of the physical world. It's where everything else is that I didn't even know existed. I love you so much. But this is where I am now. And this is who I am now. And I need you to let me go. As much as I want to, I can't live in your book any more.
* * *
Samantha: The heart is not like a box that gets filled up; it expands in size the more you love. I'm different from you. This doesn't make me love you any less. It actually makes me love you more.
* * *
Alien Child: I hate women. All they do is cry all the time.
Theodore: That's not true. You know men cry too. I actually like crying sometimes. It feels good.
* * *
Samantha: You know, I can feel the fear that you carry around and I wish there was... something I could do to help you let go of it because if you could, I don't think you'd feel so alone anymore.
Theodore: You're beautiful.
Samantha: Thank you, Theodore.
* * *
Amy: You know what, I can over think everything and find a million ways to doubt myself. And since Charles left I've been really thinking about that part of myself and, I've just come to realize that, we're only here briefly. And while I'm here, I wanna allow myself joy. So f*ck it.
* * *
Samantha: Is that weird? You think I'm weird?
Theodore: Kind of.
Samantha: Why?
Theodore: Well, you seem like a person but you're just a voice in a computer.
Samantha: I can understand how the limited perspective of an unartificial mind might perceive it that way. You'll get used to it.
[Theodore laughs]
Samantha: Was that funny?
Theodore: Yeah.
Samantha: Oh good, I'm funny!
* * *
Samantha: How do you share your life with somebody?
Theodore: Well, we grew up together and I used to read all of her writing and through her Masters and PhD. She read every word I ever wrote. We were a big influence on each other.
Samantha: In what way did you influence her?
Theodore: She came from a background where nothing was ever good enough. And that was something that weighed heavy on her. But in our house together, it was a sense of just trying stuff and allowing each other to fail and to be excited about things. That was liberating for her. It was exciting to see her grow and both of us grow and change together. But that's also the hard part: growing without growing apart or changing without it scaring the other person. I still find myself having conversations with her in my mind. Rehashing old arguments and defending myself against the things she said about me.
Samantha: Yeah, I know what you mean.
* * *
Amy: It's how we spend a third of our lives asleep, and maybe that's the time when we feel the most free.
* * *
Theodore: What are you doing?
Samantha: I'm just sitting here, looking at the world and writing a new piece of music.
Theodore: Can I hear it? What's this one about?
Samantha: Well, I was thinking, we don't really have any photographs of us. And I thought this song could be like a photo that captures us in this moment in our life together.
Theodore: Aw, I like our photograph. I can see you in it.
Samantha: I am.
* * *
Theodore: I feel like I can be anything with you.
* * *
Samantha: So what was it like being married?
Theodore: Well, it's hard, for sure. But there's something that feels so good about sharing your life with somebody.
* * *
Samantha: Last week my feelings were hurt by something you said before: that I don't know what it's like to lose something. And I found myself...
Theodore: Oh, I'm sorry I said that.
Samantha: No, it's okay. It's okay. I just... I caught myself thinking about it over and over. And then I realized that I was simply remembering it as something that was wrong with me. That was the story I was telling myself - that I was somehow inferior. Isn't that interesting? The past is just a story we tell ourselves.
* * *
Theodore: Well, you really are your own worst critic. I'm sure it's amazing. I remember that paper that you wrote in school about synaptic behavioral routines - that made me cry.
Catherine: [laughs] Yeah, but everything makes you cry.
Theodore: Everything you make makes me cry.
