"How I Live Now" is a drama romantic thriller film directed by Kevin Macdonald and based on the novel of the same name by Meg Rosoff. The story is about Daisy, a neurotic and slightly anorexic American teenager, who is sent to the English countryside for the summer to stay with her British cousins, Eddie, Isaac, and Piper. Although initially aloof, Daisy warms to them upon learning that her deceased mother used to stay there frequently. She also falls in love with Eddie, her eldest cousin, finding him to be as introverted and strong-willed as her. A few days after her arrival, her aunt flies to Geneva to attend an emergency conference, and the group take advantage of her absence to explore their local woodlands. Their summer fun ends when a terrorist coalition detonates a nuclear bomb in London that potentially kills hundreds of thousands. What a simple teenager with her own problems will do in these hard times?

Kevin Macdonald, the director of the film, is known for "One Day in September", "State of Play", "The Last King of Scotland", "Touching the Void" and "Marley". His "How I Live Now" received generally positive critical reviews. It was screened in the Special Presentation section at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. As for me, the film seems boring at first but as soon as the war bursts into livings of characters the plot has unexpected twists.

The talent of Saoirse Ronan is discovering more and more with every new film. Her Daisy looks exactly different from Daisy from "Violet & Daisy". At the beginning of the film she's a diffident girl with typical teenage problems. But then Daisy has to become strong as the war doesn't have mercy on anybody. And Saoirse has shown amazingly probable transformations.

Advantages
  • Saoirse Ronan as Daisy

Disadvantages
  • A little chaotic
  • In fact it's just a melodrama

"Strangenesses"
  • And where is love?

Clue Moments
  • Packs
  • Soldiers

War. It's always been frightening and horrible. It changes living of people beyond recognition. As far as I'm concerned I understand that there are cases when a war is inevitable. From History we know events which have turned the course of it. But in my opinion, if there are ways to avoid any war, mankind must elude it.

Problems and complexes are working in the minds of many people, not only teenagers. These thoughts actually prevent from living and taking a decisive step. But the most important words "in the minds" and "thoughts". So it's us who keep ourselves within the certain limits. It's us who give us problems. Isn't it stupid?

Quotations
* * *
Daisy: Before the war I used my willpower for stupid stuff, like not eating chocolate. I think I thought if I could control myself, then maybe the world around me would start to make sense. I guess I was pretty naive back then.
* * *
Daisy: It's like I said all that time ago, if the world doesn't end I wanna be here at home, with you. And that's how I live now.
* * *
Daisy: Imagine yourself being successful.
