"Hannibal Rising" is a crime thriller drama film directed by Peter Webber and adapted from Thomas Harris' novel of the same name. It's a prequel to the previous three films: Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal. It tells the story of young Hannibal Lecter who moves in with his beautiful aunt and begins plotting revenge on the barbarians responsible for his sister's death.

Cast
  • Gaspard Ulliel as Hannibal Lecter
  • Aaran Thomas as young Hannibal Lecter
  • Gong Li as Lady Murasaki
  • Dominic West as Inspector Pascal Popil
  • Rhys Ifans as Vladis Grutas
  • Helena-Lia Tachovska as Mischa Lecter
  • Kevin McKidd as Petras Kolnas
  • Richard Brake as Enrikas Dortlich
  • Stephen Walters as Zigmas Milko
  • Ivan Marevich as Bronys Grentz
  • Charles Maquignon as Paul Momund
  • Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė as Mrs. Lecter
  • Beata Ben Ammar as Madam Kolnas
  • Pavel Bezdek as Dieter
  • Goran Kostić as Pot Watcher
  • Robbie Kay as Robert Kay

In my opinion, this part is odd in "Hannibal" franchise as it doesn't immerse in the right atmosphere. Probably "Hannibal Rising" is more bloody than preceding parts but "more bloody" doesn't mean "more captivating". Therefore I may recommend you to watch it only because of following reasons: firstly, you're a fan of Hannibal; secondly, you want to see young Lecter performed by Gaspard Ulliel (not bad, by the way); and thirdly, you're interested in knowing how the story begins.

Advantages
  • Gaspard Ulliel as Hannibal Lecter
  • Gong Li as Lady Murasaki
  • Rhys Ifans as Vladis Grutas

Disadvantages
  • Violence (if someone is against it)
  • Not as exciting as previous parts

"Strangenesses"
  • Cannibalism

Clue Moments
  • The war
  • Death of parents
  • Death of Mischa
  • Revenge
  • The butcher

Quotations
* * *
Hannibal Lecter: Rudeness is an epidemic.
* * *
Hannibal Lecter: I love you.
Lady Murasaki: What is left in you to love?
* * *
Hannibal Lecter: I've come to collect a head.
* * *
Inspector Popil: [looks at Hannibal's polygraph tape] It's vanilla. He reacts to nothing. It's monstrous.
* * *
Petras Kolnas: What did I ever do to you?
Hannibal Lecter: Aside from eating my sister? Nothing.
* * *
Lady Murasaki Shikibu: Stop now. Forgive them.
Hannibal Lecter: Never!
* * *
Hannibal Lecter: Now tell me inspector: you lost family in the war?
Inspector Popil: Yes.
Hannibal Lecter: Did you catch who did it?
Inspector Popil: No.
Hannibal Lecter: Then we are both suspects. I could say you were fishing with me if you like.
* * *
Grutas: Answer me this. Would you have fed me to your little sister because you loved her?
Hannibal Lecter: Yes.
Grutas: There. There you have it. Love. I love myself that much and I will never apologize to you.
* * *
Lady Murasaki: They will call it murder.
Hannibal Lecter: At worst a crime of passion.
