"Only Lovers Left Alive" is a romantic horror drama film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. The story is about a musician Adam and mysterious Eve whose love has already endured several centuries. But everything changes with the arrival of uncontrollable younger sister, Ava.

Cast
  • Tom Hiddleston as Adam
  • Tilda Swinton as Eve
  • Mia Wasikowska as Ava
  • John Hurt as Marlowe
  • Jeffrey Wright as Dr. Watson
  • Anton Yelchin as Ian
  • Slimane Dazi as Bilal
  • Yasmine Hamdan as Yasmine
  • White Hills as themselves

The director of the film is Jim Jarmusch, in whose style there's slow narration (like "Stranger Than Paradise" (1984)). This way, it isn't strange that during almost two hours there's a bit of action. But for me it doesn't seem slow moving or boring - quite the contrary: I enjoy every minute of "Only Lovers Left Alive" that reminds falling into a trance especially due to enchanting music, the shady atmosphere and Adam's depression. And all of these are things that I was looking forward to.

Frankly speaking, Tom Hiddleston ("Midnight in Paris" (2011)) was my first reason to consider the film as a must-see. And not in vain. His Adam is a talented underground musician living in sombre Detroit. Today's world makes him plumb the depths of depression. Adam's state of mind bears a strong resemblance to mine and probably therefore he seems to me a kindred spirit. I think it's unnecessary to mention Tom's acting was on a high level as usual.

Tilda Swinton's Eve dresses stylish, adores poetry. She's more cheerful that her lover but this fact doesn't impede theme to be together. As "Only Lovers Left Alive" has a minimum of special effects, the film gave actors and actresses an opportunity to show their acting talents. It also affects Mia Wasikowska, Anton Yelchin, John Hurt.

Advantages
  • Tom Hiddleston as Adam
  • Tilda Swinton as Eve
  • Mia Wasikowska as Ava
  • Jim Jarmusch
  • The film is perfectly slow moving

Disadvantages
  • Again vampires but as for me these ones are more interesting than any other versions

"Strangenesses"
  • The film shows only several days of vampires' life but what will come next? All the same?

Clue Moments
  • The appearance of Ava

Immortality isn't a gift, it's a curse. Maybe it's interesting to live endlessly for several centuries but then it starts to bother: people's problems stay the same, mistakes are repeated. However, I suppose the biggest problem is impossibility to return the past, it's gone anyway. Generally everything goes, changes except immortality. So Adam and Eve are similar to viewers keeping track of history. Charms and scares at the same time.

The role of John Hurt is an historic figure. Christopher Marlowe (baptised 26 February 1564 – 30 May 1593) was an English playwright, poet and translator of the Elizabethan era. Marlowe was the foremost Elizabethan tragedian of his day. He greatly influenced William Shakespeare, who was born in the same year as Marlowe and who rose to become the pre-eminent Elizabethan playwright after Marlowe's mysterious early death. Marlowe's plays are known for the use of blank verse and their overreaching protagonists.

A warrant was issued for Marlowe's arrest on 18 May 1593. No reason was given for it, though it was thought to be connected to allegations of blasphemy—a manuscript believed to have been written by Marlowe was said to contain "vile heretical conceipts". On 20 May he was brought to the court to attend upon the Privy Council for questioning. There is no record of their having met that day, however, and he was commanded to attend upon them each day thereafter until "licensed to the contrary." Ten days later, he was stabbed to death by Ingram Frizer. Whether the stabbing was connected to his arrest has never been resolved.

Quotations
* * *
Eve: I'm sure she'll be very famous.
Adam: God, I hope not. She's way too good for that.
* * *
Adam: I just feel like all the sand is at the bottom of the hour glass or something.
* * *
Eve: Tell me now about entanglement. Einstein's spooky action at a distance. Is it related to quantum theory?
Adam: Hm. No i mean, it's not an Theory, it's proven.
Eve: How it's go again?
Adam: When you separate an entwined particle and you move both parts away from the other,even at opposite ends of the universe, if you alter or affect one, the other will be identically altered or affected.
Eve: Spooky. Even at opposite ends of the universe?
Adam: Yeah.
* * *
Adam: It's probably blood poisoning.
Eve: Don't joke Adam.
Adam: I'm not!
* * *
Adam: I like to come to the source. Besides, the mutual jeopardy makes me feel safer.
* * *
Eve: So this is your wilderness. Detroit.
Adam: Everybody left.
Eve: What's that?
Adam: It's the Packard plant, where they once built the most beautiful cars in the world. Finished.
Eve: But this place will rise again.
Adam: Will it?
Eve: Yeah. There's water here. And when the cities in the South are burning, this place will bloom.
* * *
Eve: How can you've live for so long and still not get it? This self obsession is a waste of living. It could be spend in surviving things, appreciating nature, nurturing kindness and friendship, and dancing. You have been pretty lucky in love though, if I may say so.
