"The Phantom of the Opera" is a drama musical romantic thriller film directed by Joel Schumacher and adapted from Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical of the same name, which is based on the French novel "Le Fantôme de l'Opéra" by Gaston Leroux. The story is about a spectre-like entity who lives somewhere within the opera house and is believed to be a ghost. He watches every show and one day he notices singing of beautiful Christine with who he falls in love.

Cast
  • Gerard Butler as The Phantom
  • Emmy Rossum as Christine Daaé
  • Patrick Wilson as Viscount Raoul de Chagny
  • Miranda Richardson as Madame Giry
  • Minnie Driver as Carlotta Giudicelli
  • Margaret Preece as Carlotta's singing voice
  • Ciarán Hinds as Richard Firmin
  • Simon Callow as Gilles André
  • Victor McGuire as Ubaldo Piangi
  • Jennifer Ellison as Meg Giry
  • Murray Melvin as Monsieur Reyer
  • Kevin McNally as Joseph Buquet
  • James Fleet as Monsieur Lefèvre

The film is directed by Joel Schumacher whose other works are "Falling Down", " The Client", "Batman Forever", " A Time to Kill", "Batman & Robin" Phone Booth", "Veronica Guerin", and "The Number 23". It's important to mention that "The Phantom of the Opera " was also produced and co-written by Lloyd Webber whose musical had served as base for the movie. The film turned out properly beautiful and splendid, and it's full of music which would be desirable to listen again and again. However, "The Phantom of the Opera " received mixed reviews.

The Phantom performed by Gerard Butler is revengeful, evil at the beginning but understanding and loving at the end. The actor showed his character quite well but I doubts his vocal abilities as some song could be sung better. Emmy Rossum as Christine Daaé is amazing. All her movements reflect her heroine and her voice charms in the right way. The role of Patrick Wilson is a little trite: a lover of Christine. But his singing surprised me, frankly speaking, as the actor coped with all his voice parts.

Advantages
  • Gerard Butler as The Phantom
  • Emmy Rossum as Christine Daaé
  • Patrick Wilson as Viscount Raoul de Chagny
  • Music
  • Visual effects

Disadvantages
  • Not the screen version of "The Phantom of the Opera" by Andrew Lloyd Webber or "Le Fantôme de l'Opéra" by Gaston Leroux

"Strangenesses"
  • Why Raoul?

Clue Moments
  • The monkey
  • The voice

The story touches a topic of true love. The book treats this subject in detail in contrast to the film but it doesn't impede to understand the film. Christine loves both The Phantom and Raoul. I believe that it can be so. Christine is a real pure soul who doesn't judge by appearance. This way she sees in The Phantom not his mutilated face but him as personality. Christine is one of few people that accept him. And The Phantom knows it and therefore he lets her go because when you truly love someone, you will do everything what he or she needs or wants. So does The Phantom.
